Solar Water Heating Incentives

Federal Tax Credits for Consumer Energy Efficiency

Solar Water Heaters can qualify for a Federal Tax Credit - 30% of the cost (including installation/labor costs), with no upper limit.
Qualification requirements:

  • The Solar System must be installed in a home you own and use as a residence (no rentals, but second homes qualify) between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2016.
  • At least half of the energy generated by the solar water heater ("qualifying property") must come from the sun.
  • Homeowners may only claim spending on the solar water heating system property, not the entire water heating system of the household.
  • The system must be certified by the Solar Rating and Certification Corporation (SRCC).
  • The water must be used in the dwelling.
  • The credit is not available for expenses for swimming pools or hot tubs.
California Solar Thermal Incentives
Cash rebates of up to $1,875 are available for qualifying residential solar water heating systems.

Rebates vary depending on the type of solar water heating system, location, shading and other design factors. A typical homeowner with a solar water heating system displacing a natural gas water heater can expect a rebate of about $1,500 at the initial incentive level. Rebates for electric-displacing systems start at around $1,000 for the average system. Incentives will decline over time as the program meets certain benchmarks, so customers are encouraged to apply for their rebate early.

Up to $500,000 are available for qualifying commercial / multifamily projects.
